The Federal Case

Hello and thank you for visiting The Federal Case. My name is Matthew Pastre and it’s my pleasure to present to you all of my creations. I am a woodworker with over 40 years of experience. I specialize in Federal Style furniture, but I have experience with a variety of styles. My inspiration comes from past artisans whose work is displayed in museums such as, The National Gallery and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Studying the craftsmanship and creativity of these artisans is what fuels me. I work independently so this gives me complete control of every facet of the construction process. From the selection of the wood used in the beginning to the finish applied at the end, my goal is to provide a product that not only I am satisfied with, but the customer as well. I use only quality hardwoods, safe, non-toxic finishes, and the finest veneers available. The construction methods I employ are those that have been time honored. Everything I make is held to a very high standard that will last for generations.

The Federal Case offers a variety of handcrafted products from kitchenware to furniture.  All of the woods that I use are responsibly harvested and certified. I carefully hand pick every board and strive to find the best use for it. Whether it’s trying to highlight grain, color or any other idiosyncrasy, that will let the natural beauty of the wood enhance the project. Kitchenware products are fabricated using domestic hardwoods and finished, ready to use with food safe conditioning cream. For all of the furniture I build, I use a combination of both domestic and exotic woods, the highest quality veneers and a blend of old and new construction methods and materials. All joinery is cut by hand, all surfaces are hand planed and scraped in preparation for finishing. The finishes I use are both traditional and modern depending on the end use.  I offer period reproductions, originally designed pieces and custom orders. Browse the gallery and shop to see what I have been working on. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments at mgpastre2@gmail.com.  Sign up for my mailing list to hear about what I’m working on in the shop.

Purchasing a piece of furniture is very personal.  Knowing the quality of work and customer service of my business will help you decide if The Federal Case is the right shop for you.

Here is what some customers have said about The Federal Case:

“Thank you for the board and the wax! We wouldn't go anywhere else for a board :) You have some really beautiful pieces.”

  • Katherine, Richmond, VA  2020

“I received the stool and love it.  It's exactly what I wanted.  The box it arrived in was in mint condition. Thanks for the stool and your special care in packaging it. Your nightstand/table has worked out perfectly for me, just like the laptop computer stool you made and the various other items.   That laptop computer stool plays a key role in my daily routine and I love the way it looks.

  • Bob Portsmouth, RI 2019

“I am thrilled with the cherry-wood demilune table and matching stools that Matthew of The Federal Case made for me. The style is simple, clean, and solid — almost Shaker-like. At my request, Matthew used a lighter shade of cherry for the tops of the table and stools and a darker shade for the legs. This two-toned look adds just the bit of interest I was looking for in my small kitchen. Matthew is as much artist as craftsman, and working with him was a pleasure. He answered my emails promptly and fully, and charged a reasonable price for his lovely work. Because he was going to be in my town soon after completing my order, he even delivered the items personally, charging me less than I would have had to pay UPS. Talk about the personal touch!”
